Diet and Exercise Don’t Work (WASTE OF TIME!)

If this is your plan for getting in the best
shape of your life for this year then you and I have to talk a little bit. I think the
best time is right now. What’s up, guys? Jeff Cavaliere, Diet and exercise: the ultimate combo. The
Holy Grail when it comes to getting in shape? Not quite. Actually, it’s the two biggest words I frigging
hate that we’re not only going to have you get rid of, but redefine, and replace with
two things that really do matter. We don’t want to talk about diet and exercise
anymore. What we want to talk about is nutrition and training. This is not about a game of
semantics. It’s not. This is about the mindset that goes into using
these words. If you think about it, people that talk about ‘diet and exercise’ are not
all that serious. They’re in it for the short term. They’re looking for those short term successes.
Can I follow a diet? Sure I can follow a diet. Maybe for three freaking weeks. I could tell you right now, most of the people
that are on here that are going to be following diet plans will be off of them by the 21st
of January. Statistics show that 95% of those will not
be following the same damn eating plan that we are now. Why? Because they’re too restrictive.
It’s made on false premise. It’s surrounded by things that you don’t normally do. You’re on this diet for the short term so
that you can see some short term success, but guess what? You can’t do that for a lifetime.
Nutrition is something different. Nutrition is how you fuel your body. Think about how you fuel your body. If you’re
working out, how are you fueling your muscles? You need to and you need to vary the way that
you think because you’re going to fuel your muscles, you’re going to fuel your body, you’re
going to provide your body with nutrition from now until the day you die. A diet? I hope not. I really hope not. I hope
you’re not following diets from now until the day you die because that day might come
a lot sooner than you hope. What you want to do is start following a nutrition plan.
One that allows you to actually live on it. One that gives you the leeway to enjoy some
of the things that you like without ever feeling really deprived. That doesn’t mean that you’ll
eat all kinds of junk food and shit like that because we talked about that on our cheat
foods video. If you have goals in mind that might change
how that works, but at least you’re not going to be thinking about diet. The other half
of the equation here is exercise. What is exercise? To me, exercise is purposeless. That means
I could be walking with my wife through the neighborhood and I want to see “Oh, look!
The Sullivans! They put their house on the market”, or “Oh, the Johnsons! Look at how
beautiful they decorated their porch for Halloween!” That’s not exercise. It’s a great day out
with my wife in the park, but it has no plan, there’s no progressive plan behind it, I don’t
know when the next time I’m going to do it, I don’t know what the opportunity is for
me to advance that. What am I going to walk around the back and
see if they put a new pool in, too? That’s not exercise. I don’t care if you go to
a gym and swipe your card at the front desk. That doesn’t qualify as exercise either. Just because you can walk into a gym. I see
so many people idly walking by, do a little bit of bis, a little bit of tris, a little
bit of abs and then walking out not knowing when they’re going back, not knowing when
they’re going to do the next day, not knowing when they’re supposed to progress that. If you don’t have that level of plan, or
sophistication in place you’re going around in circles, literally. In the gym and in the
type of results that you’re going to see. You’d better start training. Training has
a purpose behind it. Training is what I try to instill in you here at Athlean-X. Training is taking a plan, taking you where
you are right now, giving you and opportunity to flourish with what you can do, but challenging
you so I can keep you progressing. Then when I get you to progress you’ve got to lay that
challenge down a little bit further ahead of you so I can keep you progressing. Sometimes I have to pull back the reins, sometimes
I have to push on the gas. That’s what a training plan does. That’s what we do. That’s what
Athlean-X is all about. I provide you with a training plan. I provide you with a nutrition
plan, one that you actually live with. I’ll leave you with one last note. A lot of
people – the same people that will follow these diets – will do so at the exclusion
of anything because they figure “I’ve got plenty of people and friends that have lost
great amounts of weight using this certain diet plan.” They may even do that again at the exclusion
of any exercise at all. You know what happens then? You create a really bad body. You create
that skinny-fat body. Maybe it’ll look okay in clothes, but as soon as you take it off
you’ve got that physique where your mother wanted a boy and your father wanted a girl
and they kind of both got what they wanted. You don’t want that. You see people that
look like this, you know and I know; they diet themselves down to the point where they
look sick. They don’t even look good. They don’t look healthy. “But they’ve lost weight.”
So what? What is that about? If you want long term physique changes that
aren’t just here for aesthetic reasons, but for function – because you can purposely
do whatever the hell you want to do. You’re a lot stronger, you’re a lot more balanced,
or you’re a lot more agile, your conditioning is better and everything works better. That’s when you need to start thinking and
changing the lingo. This is not semantics, guys. Get rid of those freaking words once
and for all. Change the way you’re saying these things so you can start believing the
real meaning behind what you should be doing here. That is good nutrition and training. All right, guys. If you’re looking for a plan

  2. Started working out in October. Two months later its December, i'm seeing no gains. Halfway in December I notice this guy on Youtube and started following his advice. Its been 1 month now and I'm seeing so many more gains than I actually expected. I smile everytime I look in the mirror. I fucking love you Jeff

  5. I've been slowly losing weight. At the beginning of 2017 I was 275 lbs, and my lowest was in December at 222 lbs. Last week I weighed myself at 229 lbs and figured that even though I was going to the gym, I wasn't moving around enough during the day.

    I went for at least a hour long ruck march almost every day and chopped wood for a half hour or more, on top of going to the gym. At the end of the week I was excited to see how much weight I lost, I even would have been happy with 228, but nope, 235… after all that hard work I ended up gaining 6 pounds. I don't get it.

    When I’m eating my meat and vegetables for example and people say “ooh you on a diet that looks healthy” I’m just like “no I’m just putting in the food which my body needs to FUNCTION!”
    People are fussier about the fuel they put in their car or the dog food they give their dog then the food they put in themselves or their children!?.

  7. the whole training/exercising is wrong. exercise is physical activity purely for the sake of your own health. training is physical activity with the intention to use it in a competition, mostly athletics. athletes train. if you arent an athlete and are just doing it to better your health its exercise. so "exercise" is actually correct.

  9. Yeah, i never understood why girls would say they are on a diet so they are gonna skip a meal or some shit. A diet is whatever you eat, if you eat cake, cake is your diet, and if you eat nothing then you actually have no diet. The proper definition for a healthy diet should include healthy nutrition, there's frankly no other way to have a healthy diet

  10. “A diet” and “your diet” two different things. Your diet is what you eat, so eat right. As long as you eat anything you’ll be on a diet because it’s a word for the general basis of what you’re eating.

    So technically you’ll always be on a diet and always have been…but yeah just make sure your diet is sustainable, nutritious, and healthy not solely based around weight loss or weight gain.

  11. I also hate it when people say "I want to lose weight,". No you don't want to lose weight you want to lose body fat. If you train your muscles, train your abs and burn of fat then you won't lose much weight, this is because muscle weighs a lot more than fat. I'm classed as overweight but have six pack abs and huge muscles, am I gonna start trying to lose weight just cos I'm classed as "overweight", no of course not, cos that would mean losing my gains

  13. Nutrition and Training, it is semantic, there is a reason why you want to exchange the phrasing to create a better meaning.
    Training & Nutrition does change it to having a plan, good idea.

    I talked to people about my Life-style diet. And Exercising with the purpose of being fit, able to move large furniture without feeling awful the following day.

  14. i changed my nutrition when i was crippled by my right leg and unable to do much but hobble around on painkillers. I lost 80Lbs in a healthy way over the course of a year. But now that my legs been fixe and I can hit the gym ive noticed that my nutrition isnt up to par now

  15. Currently i do a diet on training. Im so round and cushy now, i could be my own bed. Comfortable life is better life

  16. Experience from an old retired guy. I bike over 10,000 miles per year and swim one hour daily. Add to that lots of hiking.
    With all of that I added undesired weight. Want to go on a biking trip in Europe and want to be in shape. Cut out breads, Pizza, Potatoes, Noodles, Rice and cut down alcohol. Dropped 35 lbs down to 190 lbs. I agree genetics are very important. But so is nutrition and exercise.

  19. Diet is the hardest part. I need 2300-2500 calories, but eating clean means you can eat a mountain of food and only obtain 400 calories… You not only get stuffed, but discouraged.

    Heathy food is too low in calories. There isn't enough time in the day to eat 2300 calories worth of good food. Especially when you work a 8+ hour desk job

  21. I know the video is 2 years old. But keto is the only way i stick to my diet fully. Why? Because its too restrictive. No 1 piece of chocolate, no one beer. I can only eat keto and that helps me extremely, because I dont have an excuse to eat a pizza. Unless with the cauliflower crust.

  22. Boy slash girl comment killed me LOL. On another topic; I was wondering if you tell us or rant about coffee or caffeine..? Does it matter if its part of our nutrition? Or is it just plain bad? I've watching a bunch of your nutrition videos and I don't think I've ever heard you comment about it. Correct me if i'm wrong but, I'm going to assume that you don't start your day with a cup of coffee since you said wake up and drink 2 cups of water. Maybe I just need hear it from you " Stop drinking coffee idiot! its killing your gains! " or how ever you want to word it. Thx coach!

  24. diets are good you can follow it for a month or so if you're really over weight but then after that you need to go on a good nutrition plan that you can stick to for the rest of your life in my opinion I'm sure Jeff would agree

    If someone asks u, how do I stay healthy ?
    You can't just say diet and exercise because diet is an unpredictable word – it's not specific enough. A diet can be bad and that person might think of having a bad diet. It just means eat and intake. But nutrition is the protein that we need to take in. And exercise is also not specific of how we need to live our lives. Some exercise can be bad for you.

  26. We do not need a diet. We just need to do moderate eating, moderate exercise, take in enough nutrition and live to the fullest. It's not worth it worrying about what you are going to eat all the time and how each food will damage your body – which it won't as long as you don't overdose or overeat on Something. You need to give ypur stomach a break also.but we need to prepare times for physical activity and it doesn't have to be sport. If you hate sport like me, that's ok. It doesn't make you unfit. You can do stretching, running, working out those muscles or something active each day

  28. I needed to hear that! I dieted for a few months and lost 20 lbs, but now I’m skinny fat.
    Now I have a much better idea of what I should do in terms of my nutrition and training!

  29. I find it cool, that you tell people how to train but I think you're wrong about not being/looking healthy if you diet yourself down. I have done that for a lot of years and I have eaten 2 Times a big amount of vegetables but never really lot over the whole day. When I was 15 I looked like 11 or 12 and I may have been skinny but I was very healthy and happy etc.

  30. I only eat chicken and fish and a lot of veggies and fruits throughout the day but man, oh man do i crave chips and salty junk and its so hard for me to say no! I knoe i could be in the best shape if I dropped them, but easier said than done everyone chooses their poison

  31. Honestly, I don't like to call or word anything such a so called "diet". For me, personally, I just call it "eating healthy". I don't eat fast foods or processed shit or sugary cakes or refined carbs or pizza.

    I eat things that is good for me and gonna help me stay in shape by putting on muscle. I eat chicken breast, brown rice, black beans, lot of fruits and vegetables, oatmeal, tuna, etc. Just good things that are healthy and help you stay in shape.

    I think people make things too complicated when it comes to eating right. But when you first start working out, you're not gonna be dieting or anything like that. Everyone eats like shit when they first start working out, including myself.

    You make a lot of mistakes in the beginning. I did a lot of that too but you just gotta keep learning and learning. Find what exercise routine works best for you and find a healthy eating plan that you like and enjoy that you can stick with. Everything takes a lot of self discipline and motivation.

  32. I really needed to hear this from someone who knows what they are talking about. I set a Goal to lose weight in 1 month, 2 weeks in on my diet. I'm losing the motivation, like you said. I lose weight, but I don't look good with my shirt off. I really wanna get more fit, like I used to be. But idk, My ( Diet ) is really restricting.
