Hello! I am Dr. Waheed Khan. I am Senior Consultant and Head Department of Nephrology
at Narayana Hospital, Jamshedpur. This Hospital was established around 19 years back. This is the biggest hospital in Jharkhand. One important question which
patients always ask is about diet. What cn kidney patients or
those who have kidney problems eat? So broadly there are two types of kidney diseases,
one is acute kidney injury which happens due to diarrhea and malaria.
This can be recovered completely. In this there is no need of diet restriction,
normal diet is fine. In other type of disease which occurs
due to diabetes and blood pressure, that is called CKD – Chronic Kidney Disease. This stays life long and cannot be recovered completely. In this there is a need of little diet restriction but not much. Indian diet, the food which we eat that is already protein restricted that is why scientifically it is wrong to restrict diet here. That leads to malnutrition and
people get infected and they die early. Things which we should avoid are fruits, dry fruits, cold drinks, juice which contain
more potassium should be avoided. Otherwise there is no need of diet restriction. There is one general concept among people. Non vegetarian or protein rich diet
should be avoided. It is totally wrong. Our body and muscles are made up of proteins so we need some proteins
otherwise all our muscles will break down and gradually we will become weak. So at least 50 grams non vegetarian
or egg or paneer we should consume daily. We don’t need too much of diet restriction.
Proper nutrition is very important for every sick patient. Similarly it is required for kidney patients as well. Thank you.
