Hi. I’m Brenda Thompson, registered dietitian
and owner of Life Skills Nutrition. In this segment, I’m going to talk about fiber and
where to find it on the food label. If you look here, dietary fiber is found under “Total
Carbohydrates.” Dietary fiber is important in the diet because it keeps the digestive
system healthy. It can also help decrease cholesterol among other health benefits. Fiber
is usually found in grains, especially whole grains. It is found in vegetables and fruits.
If you look on this tray here, all of these foods provide fiber for the diet. However,
nuts do not and the cheese does not either. But, all of the other foods do. Celery is
extremely high in fiber. When you eat celery, the crunch and then the chewing, the fibrous
material that you start to feel that is stringy and starts to pull apart…that is the fiber
that you are eating. Hummus is full of beans which is very high in fiber. Some of these
whole grains and then fruits and vegetables are also really great options to increase
fiber in your diet.
