Ketogenic Diet – Easy explanation of Ketogenic Diet


Hi, I am Raadhika. Let’s talk about the Ketogenic diet. I first came across this diet while researching the connection
between food and epilepsy. I believe most medical conditions can be improved through diet. The Ketogenic diet is high in fat mid-level in protein and very low in carbs. Basically we are turning the food pyramid on its head to treat pediatric epilepsy in children. Carbohydrates are almost completely cut out instead, proteins make up a large part of the meal. In a regular meal, carbohydrates are metabolized for energy but in Ketogenic diets, fats metabolize for energy. Starved of carbs the body is forced to burn fats this tricks the body into starvation mode…and fats change into fatty acids & ketones. Ketones are used by the brain to replace glucose for energy this condition is “ketosis”. Side note: If you have bad breath this is due to ketosis. In pediatric eplipsy, ketosis reduces seizures…because energy from fat burning is kinder on the brain… than burning carbs. Foods like white bread, pasta, grains & refined sugar are carbs and can’t be part of a ketogenic diet. High fat foods like butter, cream & mayonnaise are fine. The Atkins diet was the first low carb diet to be based on the ketogenic diet. Later, the Dukan diet refined the Atkins diet and is a popular, more structured, low carb-low fat diet. You are encouraged to exercise lightly and include oat bran as part of the Dukan diet. The latest and very popular Paleo diet is a low carb, dairy free gluten free & low fat diet. The Paleo diet excludes refined carbs…but natural sweeteners like stevia can be used. It is a low glycemic diet as well. In fact, if we take out the dairy and limit the carbohydrate containing fruits and vegetables… then the ketogenic diet will probably end up becoming a ketogenic-paleo diet. Thank you for listening.   3. Actually I have been doing this diet for about 4 or 5 days. My joint pain went away. No stiffness in the morning either, I used to be in alot of pain. I will never go back

  5. So I know that I can eat meat pork fish and eggs and pretty much any green vegetable but my question is what about peanut butter cottage cheese? Bc those have a bit of sugar and carbs

  7. i have a daughter with eplipcy. she is eight years .i want to know if i can do the ketogenic diet by my self till ı get the opportunity to talk with a doctor about it.or can ı just simply try to give her more fat and less carbohydrates in her food.

Did I hear correctly at 1:37:  "Foods like white bread, pasta, GREENS, and refined sugar are carbs…"  Greens?  GREENS?  Do you mean turnip or mustard greens?  Did you say 'creams?"  But that isn't right–heavy cream IS low carb.  I am just not sure what you said, which you meant?  Can you please repeat it for me?  Surely you didn't say 'greens?'

Glucose or sugar comes from the food we eat. Carbohydrates such as fruit, bread pasta and cereals are common sources of glucose. These foods are broken down into sugar in our stomachs, and then absorbed into the bloodstream. So why
    to eat fat.

  10. I agree with Molly A. Block. WHAT THE HELL WAS THIS????  Greens are high in carbs? Paleo is low fat?? And Dukan diet is good?? Jeezzz…..

  11. I'm in the ketosis stage but I don't like the bad breath that comes with it. How do I get rid of this bad breath? Any suggestions???

I  have yet to see anyone promoting keto explain why fat ingested is selected for use by the keytones, and at the same time-the fat you already have stored is also burned.  .  I mean-I hear a lot of keto experts say eat a lot of fat and you will lose weight and I want to believe that-but if you are ingesting fat, why would your body ever select the fat already stored in you to use as energy ?  If the body is basically being fed the energy it needs via extra fat consumption, why would it ever eat away at the fat you already have on your body ?   I have yet to see anyone explain that.  I am doing keto as a matter of long term health-I could stand to lose a few pounds, but that is not my greatest concern-I would just like that point clarified.

However i am wondering how a vegan can continue on keto diet – i am currently on coconut flour, almond flour, nuts, seeds, extra virgin olive oil, avocado oil, coconut oil, coconut milk, tofu, greens…but wanted to see if you have any recipes for me? Appreciate all your help, i started this on 9/28 and doing well so far…however i am so tired of eating these same things…
