Managing a Healthy Diet : How to Exercise for Healthy Weight Loss


Hi, I’m Brenda Thompson, registered dietitian
and owner of Life Skills Nutrition. In this segment I’m going to talk about incorporating
exercise in your life for weight loss. Before you start any exercise regimen, you definitely
want to talk to your doctor first so that you don’t have any complications that might
occur. When you start an exercise program, you always want to remember that it is calories
in, calories out. Diet and exercise work hand in hand. There is no secret to losing weight
like I said, it’s the amount of calories that you take in and the amount of calories that
you expend. Aerobic exercise helps you burn those calories. Strength training helps you
increase your metabolism. The reason is because when you’re strength training, you increase
the muscles, and muscles take more calories than fat take to maintain. So the more muscles
you build in your body, the more calories you’re going to burn throughout the day. The
more aerobic exercise you do, the more calories you’re going to burn. It is recommended that
you exercise 30 minutes at least five days a week. Here are some examples of things you
might want to do for exercising. Brisk walking, you want to make sure that you can still talk
when you’re walking, but make sure that you’re breathing a little bit heavily. Dancing is
a wonderful way to get aerobic activity. Biking, low-impact aerobics, including water aerobics,
swimming and playing tennis. Then we move then to lifting weights. You can also do bands,
pilates, and yoga are also great ways to get in strength training. You do want to make
sure that when you start an exercise program that you make stretching part of the regimen.
It’s important to warm up for about five minutes before you begin stretching. Stretching will
help prevent any injuries that might prevent you from exercising and decreasing the weight
that you might be able to lose during that time. So be careful, but however, find an
exercise that you love. Exercise should make you feel good, it should relieve stress and
be something that you love to do.
